An American Girl Inspired in Seoul

Nothing is more necessary for creation than inspiration. Many things may come into this world by chance, luck, or miracles of physics, but for the artists, the designers, the writers, the architects, and even the dreamers, inspiration is the key to creation. Inspiration is whatever renews or reconfigures creative energy: it could be a patch of light on the sidewalk or an air bubble in a chunk of ice floating in your favorite it drink. It could be the smell of that drink, or the taste, or the way a person you admire sips from their straw. Inspiration can come from anywhere. And as artists, as inventors, as creators, we must always remember that and look for that which is hidden beneath the surface. We all remember that scene from American Beauty (1999) where one of the male characters becomes mesmerized by footage of a plastic bag caught in an updraft. Fiona Apple too found inspiration, though perhaps saw less beauty, in a similarly floating paper bag (“Paper Bag”).
